Why Preeti text looks like this

Preeti is a Nepali font from the time before Unicode. It doesn’t store Nepali letters: it draws Devanagari shapes on the keys of the Latin alphabet. You type g]kfn, and the font shows नेपाल. As long as the font is installed, nobody notices. Open the file on a phone, paste it into Facebook or a website, and the Latin letters appear.

Preeti and its relatives Kantipur and Sagarmatha are still common in Nepali government offices, newspapers and print shops, and many older Word and Excel files use them. Unicode Nepali (fonts like Kalimati, Mangal or Nirmala UI) stores real Devanagari letters instead – the text is readable everywhere, searchable on Google and can be copied without losing anything.

How to convert Preeti to Unicode

  1. Open the document in Word or Excel, select the text with Ctrl+A and copy it with Ctrl+C. It is fine if it looks like Nepali there – the copied text is the Latin letters.
  2. Paste it into the box above. Mojibuster recognizes Preeti and converts it right away.
  3. Copy the Unicode text, or download it as a file. In Word, paste it and choose a Unicode font such as Kalimati or Nirmala UI.

You can also drop a TXT or CSV file that contains Preeti text – for example a list saved from Excel. Word files (.docx) can’t be opened directly: copy the text instead.

What the converter takes care of

  • Visual order: in Preeti the ि sign is typed before its letter (l + g = नि) and the reph र् after the syllable (sfo{ = कार्य). Mojibuster puts both in Unicode order.
  • Letters built from two keys: km becomes फ, em झ, pm ऊ, qm क्र, and cf] the vowel ओ.
  • The number row: in Preeti it types letters – 5 is छ, 7 ठ, 8 ड – while Nepali numerals sit on Shift: !@# becomes १२३. Numbers typed in a normal font in between stay numbers.
  • Punctuation: . becomes the danda ।, = a full stop and - _ brackets – as in the Preeti keyboard layout.

Names, e-mail addresses and links typed in a normal font in between stay as they are. Text that is already Unicode Nepali is left alone.

When the text shows ठinstead

If your Nepali text shows characters like ने rather than Latin letters, it isn’t Preeti: it is Unicode text that was read with the wrong encoding. That is repaired on another page: Hindi, Nepali or Bengali text with ठcharacters. Hindi typed in Kruti Dev: Kruti Dev to Unicode. Background: what is mojibake?

Frequently asked questions

Which fonts are supported?

Preeti, the most common Nepali legacy font. Kantipur and other fonts with the same keyboard layout convert the same way. Sagarmatha, Himali and other layouts may differ in single letters.

Why does my text still show Latin letters?

Mojibuster converts only when the result is clearly Nepali, so that English text is never changed by mistake. Very short snippets or text in another font can stay unchanged. Try pasting a full sentence or paragraph.

Can I convert Unicode back to Preeti?

Not on this page. Unicode is the better choice for anything you share or publish – it works without a special font.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, also on a phone. Your text never leaves your device.
