This happens when one system exports the list as UTF-8 and another reads it as Windows-1252 – for example on the way from the CRM through Excel into a newsletter tool or an ERP. Once the file is saved in between, the error is baked into the file.

Why not just use an online converter?

Most converters on the web upload your file to their server. For a customer list, that means personal data goes to a third party, often without a contract and without knowing where the server is or how long the file stays there. Under the GDPR and similar laws, that is a real problem for businesses.

Mojibuster works differently: the repair runs as JavaScript in your browser. The file is neither uploaded nor stored. How to verify that yourself in the network tab or with an offline test is explained for businesses & data protection officers.

How to repair the export

  1. Export the list from your CRM or ERP as CSV.
  2. Drop the file into the box above. Mojibuster repairs only the broken characters – delimiters, quotes and line breaks stay exactly as they are.
  3. Check the repaired spots under What changed?.
  4. Download the file. Keep Save with BOM on for Excel; for imports into other systems, UTF-8 without BOM is usually fine.

Prevent it next time

  • Choose UTF-8 explicitly when your CRM offers an export option.
  • Open CSV files in Excel via Data → From Text/CSV instead of double-clicking – see Excel shows special characters wrong.
  • Save from Excel as CSV UTF-8 before importing the file somewhere else.
  • Delete exports with customer data once you no longer need them – the repaired file as well as the original.

Is my customer data uploaded?

No. The file is read and repaired in your browser. Its content never leaves your device.

Do we need a data processing agreement?

Since Mojibuster never receives the data, in my assessment you don't. This is not legal advice – details for the review are on the page for businesses.

Does it work with exports from Salesforce, HubSpot or SAP?

Yes. Mojibuster doesn't care where the file comes from, as long as it is text – CSV, TXT, JSON or XML, for example.

How large can the file be?

Lists with hundreds of thousands of rows are no problem. Large files are processed in the background with a progress bar.
